Although, not in the Mayor’s Book Club list for ‘10, Keep Austin Weird – A Guide to the Odd Side of Town by Red Wassenich is a good read for Austinites or just anybody who likes to read a book with lot’s of pictures!
I checked this book out from the City of Austin Library last night. The library is great, you can use it like Netflix or Blockbuster online movie rental account. You have a queue in which you can fill up with movies, books, or music. They transport your requested items from all of the city to a local location for pick up. You can have the items out for three weeks and up to five movies out at a time! Why not use it, you pay for it in tax money!
I couldn’t stop reading this book last night, it was great!

Get your copy of Keep Austin Weird – A Guide to the Odd Side of Town by Red Wassenich on Amazon, today!
And how appropriate, today another Austin landmark is slated to close. Jaime’s Spanish Village will be closing July 30, as reported by the Statesman. realbeer commented, “Actually, Austin’s slogan changed some time ago from “Keep Austin Weird” to ‘Keep Austin Corporate’”. Seems so true.
I would like to offer, Keep Austin Free, Man!
Keep Austin Free, not related to, but although cool site about all that is free and keeping it that way, in Austin, Keeping Austin Free
Proposed Amendment to Austin’s Land Development Code
McMansion Amendment spreads South
Expanding the boundaries to include the following: north of William Cannon, south of Ben White Boulevard, east of Manchaca Drive, and west of Interstate Highway 35.

Current McMansion regulations (Subchapter F, Land Development Code).
A surprise letter came today for a meeting and vote on Thursday. They plan to further tell us what we can do with our own land that we pay property taxes for. Further restrictions, more limitations, and more control is what they are after. Vote NO! on this proposal that they are attempting to shove down our throats at the eleventh hour. I don’t particularly love “McMansion” type of large gaudy shoddy home development. There is a large condo style fourplex just a few doors down from 4408 Hank Avenue sprawling over two lots. Yet, these developers/investors own the land, although probably temporarily, more than likely defaulting back to the almighty greed hungry bankers, they too have control on what they can build on the property.

Be sure to protest your property tax this year.
Austin real estate property appraisals have decreased another 4.8% average in 2010, yet due to budget restraints Travis County property taxes are increasing an average of 4.8 % this year. (These are close to the same figures as in 2009.)

Way to go Willie!! I bet that felt incredible, liberating, and cool to cut off your trademark pig tails! I loved ‘em, but I didn’t have to wear them. Maybe you can start growing them back, but I subscribe to the WWWD What Would Willie Do mantra, so do what you do.
Willie is most deserving to have a high profile street in Austin named in his honor. And always better now than later. Although Austin was a few weeks shy of being the first in the area to honor him. The cross streets of both Willie Way and On The Road Again appeared at the new Backyard in Bee Caves.
At least there is not a Willie Toll Road as proposed a few years ago. Willie declined and saying that “I’d rather have an electric chair named after me”
I and others that I have spoken with think Congress Avenue renamed to Willie Nelson Boulevard would have been more appropriate, than Second Street. Since Second Street is the avenue more closely related to our city governance.

This is a newly completely remodeled house in an upcoming neighborhood. Although it remains a great family neighborhood, it is also become a trendy area for young hipsters. The old South Austin neighborhood is being transformed into a neighborhood with downtown urban appeal and lifestyle. It is transforming before our eyes. Many houses are being renovated, moved or leveled and brand new houses are taking their place. Many streets are evident of this change, but none as much as Hank Avenue. Where most houses have already been renovated and this street boasts the newest wildest double lot two-story four condo expansion in the neighborhood. The bold neighborhood extension near Clawson and Crown is the only other that rivals this expansion.
It is a working class neighborhood with very eclectic neighbors. Many artists and musicians choose this area to live. 78745 is becoming the new 78704, as the high rents have forced out working artists. With the good people, shady trees, quite and low traffic streets, many are proud to call this home.
This house is close to daycare, public schools, parks, and libraries. There is a church and a hospital within walking distance. Great places to eat, like a plate of Huevos Rancheros to sit down and eat or to go from Taqueria La Tapatia, shopping at Southwood Mall and Shopping Center, and fun at Blazer Tag Adventure Center for the kids and the kid in all of us. And a short bike or drive to Central Market South and Sunset Valley Farmers Market for farm raised good food on Saturday mornings.
Available for showing by appointment only. To schedule a time please contact us or Call 512-445-0814, but be sure that you mention that you read about the house at FreemanProperties.com
